French Normandy Meets Mid Mod
It’s rare when our team gets the chance to stage a home twice. But that opportunity presented itself earlier this month when we received a call from a client (for whom we’d staged a different home) that he was ready for us to come back in and stage a newly remodeled French Normandy home in Los Feliz (Los Angeles, CA) that we had staged just last year. “Yes!,” we said enthusiastically. He had made some key changes and updates so the home required a fresh new look. We started with a West Elm sofa scored for a great deal on FB Marketplace!
For starters, he played up the home’s French Normandy roots by adding a herringbone pattern brick fireplace insert and covering the exterior brick with a smooth plaster. The existing wooden mantle remains but now has more impact and contrast. We started with a tribal pattern rug on the dark wood floor and accented with neutrals.
Urban Outfitters’ round wooden coffee table seems to have found its perfect home here. Simply styled with coffee table books and a spiky metal object, the table commands center stage. In the background, a home office.
This versatile bookcase from West Elm has all the Mid Century feels we needed for this home office. Now — more than ever — a tranquil work-from-home situation is desired by prospective buyers.
An amazing woven raffia medallion hangs over the fireplace — It was a serendipitous FaceBook Marketplace find.
Adjacent to the living room is this spacious dining room, which we modernized by adding Saarinen reproduction dining chairs and a West Elm glass-top dining table. Brass accents appear in the form of metal wall decor with a Mid Century feel.
The remodeled kitchen has all the charm of a French countryside abode with the conveniences today’s home buyer is seeking. Soft brown textured tiles feel Old World and convey a warm tone.
When presented with a vintage space — or a remodel with vintage intent — we always take the opportunity to style with appropriate pieces, such as this vintage basket-wrapped demijohn with large Monstera leaves. Yes, you can find reproductions of these bottles, but nothing compares to the real thing. It’s falling apart on the top a little, but that just makes us love it more.
A peek into the breakfast nook reveals the awesome ceiling star beam detail and a simple dark wood table with Mid Century modern style chairs. A large rough-hewn wooden bowl with natural wood beads speaks of simplicity and calm. A tall basket vase adds texture and scale.
The primary bedroom speaks softly in neutral tones with tribal and geometric patterns underfoot in the World Market rug and on the bed. Brass lamps on the nightstands and a brass mirror add shine. We love the coziness of a thick puffy comforter folded into thirds at the foot of the bed and a bench on which to pile a couple more pillows.
A guest bedroom in rust and black. One of our fave beds is the star of this space — a Mid Century modern style spindle bed with a whole lot of presence. Add a rust-hued kilim pillow and a tassel throw blanket and you’re good to go!
Another FaceBook Marketplace find, this Mid Century modern black sherpa fabric chair fit perfectly with our rust and black scheme. Oh, and the Crate and Barrel rust rug — Yep, FB too.
Pattern. Pattern. Pattern. We can’t say it enough. If you’re going neutral, it’s time to fall in love with pattern. That. And texture. Look for the nubby (embroidered cotton pillow) to contrast with the soft (sheepskin), and keep your color palette to shades of warm and cool neutrals.
This home has it all. As if the charming French Normandy original home isn’t enough to entice, take a stroll down the driveway to this completely finished garage, which we staged as an entertaining haven — or just a space for a family to chill and relax.
A generous sea grass rug lays down the foundation for this garage room, which can handle two sofas set at an angle like a sectional, a Noguchi reproduction coffee table and plenty of wall space for your art collection. Here we featured a series of prints from The Printable Studio on Etsy and a warm orange macrame wall hanging.
Drinks are served at this impromptu bar. If you have a console table, you too can have a bar. It’s all in the styling.
Just outside the garage lies a large open backyard set up for long evenings under the stars. We found this farmhouse style table and eight Tolix chairs on FB Marketplace.
More outdoor space, perfect for family star-gazing or enjoying adult beverages on summer nights.
