Staging an Encino Mid Century Modern Masterpiece
We have a deep abiding love of Mid Century modern design - in everything from architecture to furniture. So when we first saw this home, our jaws pretty much dropped to the floor. Eichler-style features such as glass walls, post-and-beam construction and an open floor plan were abundant. The homeowner had also added cool brass + glass pendants and sconces to complement the home's intrinsic appeal. Our staging goal was to begin with a Mid Century modern base - and layer in eclectic and personal pieces of decor and art to give the space a worldly, lived-in feel. All photography by Norris Photo
A twilight shot of the exterior
Outside the master bedroom, another patio, just right for two Panton chairs.
The dramatic entry gives you a taste of what's to come.
An abundance of outdoor space - and killer views.
The ink was barely dry on the contract when we started our design plan. A Brooklyn sofa and a pair of Lucas swivel base chairs from West Elm anchor the living area.
A Mid Century modern credenza, custom-made by Pepe's Furniture in Echo Park, holds court in the entry. And that medallion is EVERYTHING.
An Eames replica lounger and ottoman because... well, just because.
The open-space plan allowed for great flexibility in room layout. Luckily, the Nelson saucer pendant left no doubt as to the placement of the dining table. Bertoia and Saarinen chairs surround a paperclip table from World Market. Underneath, a nubby tribal pattern rug.
We love how IKEA's Strandmon chair looks right at home here. The pillow's geo pattern echos the side table legs.
Glass walls create the sense of privacy without any loss of light.
This kitchen. This view. That pendant. Sign us up, please!
A cheeky Leon Trotsky B&W portrait peeks out from the kitchen. On the right, a glimpse into the office.
Eames molded plywood chairs share office space with a West Elm bookcase and a white lacquer desk. The vintage Mid Century lamp was found at a Pensacola, FL thrift shop.
Neutral, modern shapes and vintage books fill out the shelves.
The master bedroom is a study in simplicity and the power of a strong tribal pattern. In this case, a jute rug.
A massive egg chair we found online fills a corner.
Hallway built-ins get treated to an eclectic mix of worldly items, suggesting the homeowner is well-traveled.
Not ones to leave out key details, we couldn't resist the awesome orange graphics of this toothpaste box.
Salmon tones in a second bedroom. A vintage kilim rug found in Paris serves to brighten a wooden headboard.
In another bedroom, a vintage arc lamp, embroidered pillow and Mid Century lamp.
Each bedroom has its own door to a small patio.
In our world, bathrooms aren't excluded from the decor landscape.
To play up the inherent drama in the outside patio's pendant light, we added the dark and light contrast of black Panton chairs around a white picnic table.
Acapulco style outdoor chairs on the patio.
